The Real Reason I Created Seb Derm Safe™ Products (Before I Even Knew What Seb Derm Was)

From a Kitchen Counter to a Community Movement

When I started making products back in 2019, I wasn’t trying to build a brand. I wasn’t thinking about SEO, keywords, or categories like “seb derm safe.” Honestly, I didn’t even fully understand my own scalp condition yet.

What I did know was simple:

I needed products that didn’t hurt my skin — and I needed products safe enough for my kids.

At the time, I had newborns at home, and every label I picked up felt like a chemistry experiment gone wrong. The personal-care aisle was filled with ingredients I couldn’t pronounce, preservatives linked to irritation, fillers that didn’t need to be there, and formulas that made my scalp burn or flare.

So I did what any desperate dad with a background in design and DIY problem-solving would do:

I started making my own.

What began as one small batch became two… then ten… then friends started asking if they could try them… and eventually local people wanted to buy them. I thought, Maybe I’m not the only one who needs truly clean products that don’t trigger flare-ups.

So I put up a website under my old music producer moniker “J Farell” thinking it would mostly be a local thing — a small storefront for parents who, like me, wanted something safer.

I didn’t know it at the time, but this was the beginning of something much bigger.

I Thought I Had “Fungal Acne.” I Had No Idea What Seb Derm Really Was.

Like so many people, I went through the usual guessing game:

• Is it fungal acne?

• Is it dandruff?

• Is it dermatitis?

• Is it stress?

• Is it just “sensitive skin”?

No one online seemed to have real answers.

The scientific papers contradicted each other.

Reddit was the only place where the conversation felt real.

Back then, even on Reddit, it was mostly people sharing random routines and trying to piece things together like detectives in the dark.

Despite not having the full picture yet, I followed one principle:

If it could irritate sensitive skin, I didn’t use it. If it clogged pores, I cut it. If it fed Malassezia, it was out. If it didn’t need to be in the formula, I removed it.

I still follow those same rules in everything I create today for my Seb Derm Safe™ product line.

I researched fatty acid chains.

I looked up every ingredient listed as a potential trigger.

I double-checked medical journals one by one.

I only used caprylic triglycerides with zero lauric acid.

I rejected heavy butters.

I removed anything that could ferment or feed yeast.

I didn’t call it “Seb Derm Safe™.”

I was simply trying to make something that let me live a normal life again.

Six Years Later… the Seb Derm World Is Still Quiet

Here’s what shocked me as I began writing blogs recently:

There is still no major brand speaking to sebor­rheic dermatitis sufferers.

That gap is exactly why I built Seb Derm Safe™ products — everyday essentials formulated with zero triggers.

No complete lines made specifically for SD.

No simple everyday-product alternatives.

No lifestyle-oriented messaging.

No brand unifying people under a single standard of safety.

There are products for fungal acne.

There are products for eczema.

There are products for psoriasis.

But SD? Silence.

Even now in 2025, the only real gathering place is Reddit — and even there, nobody is leading the conversation or creating a system people can follow.

It’s like the entire community has been ignored by the industry.

And that’s when I realized…

I wasn’t building an ecommerce store.

I was building a voice.

A movement.

A standard.

And a home for people who feel overlooked.

That’s when Seb Derm Safe™ became more than a personal project —

it became the mission.

It Was Born Out of Survival.**

I didn’t set out to coin a term.

I didn’t set out to create a trend.

I didn’t even set out to build a brand.

Seb Derm Safe™ came from one simple truth:

I wanted to stop hurting my skin.

I wanted my kids to use products that were safe.

And I wanted people like me to finally have options.

Now, as the world is waking up to SD conversations, people are realizing:

• Clean isn’t always safe for SD

• Natural isn’t always safe for SD

• Organic isn’t always safe for SD

• Even “dermatologist tested” isn’t always safe for SD

There has never been a standard.

So I created one.

Not because I wanted to dominate a market…

But because I needed to live like a human being again.

And now thousands of people use that standard every day to feel the same safety I once had to build alone.

My blog used to be about SEO.

Rankings.

Optimization.

Search terms.

But something shifted recently.

People started commenting.

And I realized:

This is about giving people hope again.
