For over a year, I was losing hope.
My scalp was itchy, flaky, and inflamed almost every day. I had tried everything — from harsh prescription-strength shampoos to DIY remedies — and nothing worked long-term. I dreaded wash days. I dreaded non-wash days even more.
But what changed my life wasn’t a steroid.
It wasn’t an expensive serum.
It was…
my own hair styling products.
Yep. The very products I created — Clean Clay and Sea Salt Spray — ended up healing my scalp. 🙌🏼
This is the story of how I went from constant discomfort to calm, healthy, and confident — using just two products and zero compromise.
My SD Flare Journey 😖🌀
I’ve dealt with seborrheic dermatitis (seb derm) since my teenage years, but it got really bad recently. After stressful events this past summer, my body went into full-blown histamine reactivity. My scalp was one of the first places to freak out.
The flaking. The burning. The itching. It was brutal.
I switched to a strict low-histamine diet, started taking DAO and Probiota Bifido, and adjusted my supplement stack. But even with all that internal work, I kept having flares — until I reintroduced Clean Clay and Sea Salt Spray into my hair routine.
This was taken at the peak of my seb derm flare, when the itching, flaking, and inflammation were constant. I felt hopeless — until I started experimenting with my own formulas. Look how inflamed, oily, and pink my scalp is! And the seb derm caused awful shedding — all I wanted to do was wear hats to cover my thinning scalp.
Why I Stopped Using Styling Products ❌💈
When I first started addressing my flares seriously, I stopped using all styling products. I didn’t want to risk clogging my follicles or irritating my scalp with anything scented or comedogenic.
But something kept nagging at me…
When I used to style my hair with Clean Clay, I could go 3–4 days between washes without itching. I just chalked it up to coincidence at the time.
I had forgotten one key detail:
Clean Clay and Sea Salt Spray were actually soothing my scalp.
Just a few weeks later — after using nothing but my Clean Clay and Sea Salt Spray every day. Same scalp, totally different story. You can see that my hair follicles are not inflamed anymore.
What Happened When I Brought Them Back 🔁🧪
One day I had a big event coming up and didn’t want to look disheveled, so I broke my “no product” rule and styled my hair with Sea Salt Spray and then Clean Clay after a light blow dry.
What happened next blew me away.
No itching.
No flaking.
No irritation.
Not that day.
Not the day after.
Not even three days later.
And I thought… wait a second.
Was it my own products helping me heal this whole time?

🧴 Why Clean Clay is a Scalp Saver (Not Just a Styling Clay)
Clean Clay is more than a matte hold. Here’s what makes it a quiet hero for seb derm scalps like mine:
-
Kaolin clay helps absorb excess oil and sebum without overdrying
-
MCT oil is ultra-light, anti-microbial, and gentle for reactive skin
-
Beeswax seals in moisture without clogging follicles
-
Unscented & essential-oil free — no unnecessary irritants
-
SebDerm Safe™ approved — I use it on my own sensitive scalp
-
Perfect for post-wash styling — helps you extend your no-wash days without flare
The best part? When I rub a dime-size amount between my palms and finger-comb it through my hair, it lightly brushes my scalp — enough to calm it, not coat it.
🌊 Why Sea Salt Spray Became My Secret Weapon
The Sea Salt Spray I made for styling turned out to be a total godsend for flare days. Here’s why:
-
Magnesium-rich Epsom salt calms inflammation
-
Aloe vera juice soothes and hydrates the scalp
-
Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5) conditions hair and skin
-
Fine mist gets all over the scalp (not just the hair)
-
Light hold + volume makes it easy to style, even on bad hair days
I realized that the spray always hit my scalp first — and it felt amazing. Cooling. Calming. Healing.
My Daily Scalp Ritual 🧘♂️🫧
Here’s exactly what I do now to keep my scalp calm and my hair looking great:
-
Every morning after my lukewarm shower (yes, I know… no more scalding-hot showers — you’ll thank me later):
Lightly mist scalp and hair with Sea Salt Spray as a pre-styler before blow-drying on low heat (making sure to aim upward to keep the scalp cool)
-
Then:
Warm a dime-sized amount of Clean Clay in my hands
Finger-comb through hair to style
No pressure, just light contact with scalp
-
Wash days:
2-3x a week use medicated shampoo like ketoconazole
Use Seb Derm Safe™ shampoo on regular wash days
-
Then follow up with my styling combo above
This combo helps me stretch time between washes without itching or flaking — and it helps my scalp and appearance look good while healing.
Why This Matters 🎯
I used to feel like I had to choose:
Look presentable or let my scalp heal.
Now, I don’t have to choose.
And neither do you.
If you’re dealing with scalp flares, seb derm, or even just seasonal dryness, don’t underestimate how styling products can help — if they’re made clean, safe, and thoughtfully.
That’s why I created J Farell.
And that’s why I still use my own products every single day. 💛
